In the fall of 2011 the Fisheries Museum will relocate to the Multi-Purpose Complex at 4917 City Park Drive. The museum tells the 200-year story of life in the fishing communities along Bayou Barataria. Exhibits explore the people and industries of the region, including the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte, who operated in the Gulf of Mexico in the early 1800s.

The park’s 23,000 acres offer a taste of Louisiana’s wild wetlands. Boardwalks and trails wind through the park’s bayous, swamps, marshes and forests. See alligators, nutrias and over 300 species of birds. Visit the visitor’s center to see exhibits on how the Mississippi River built Louisiana’s wetlands, the national importance of the area, and the relation between the land and its people. Self-guided tours and cell phone tours are offered.

Jean Lafitte Nature Study Park

City Park Street (behind the Multi-Purpose Center)

Hike on boardwalks over a 41-acre site through the moss covered cypress swamp. Trails include covered pavilions, benches and scenic overlooks. This is a great place for viewing wildlife – from herons to alligators and turtles – and marsh plant species, such as Louisiana iris, lilies and orchids.
